AI Legal by Rythmisis: We built the first AI Act chatbot

Rythmisis Institute is proud to announce the development of the first AI chatbot capable of analyzing and providing feedback on the EU AI Act.

The project was led and supervised by Spyros Avlonitis, Machine Learning Engineer and Georgios Konstantinou, Policy Advisor and Software Developer, who collaborated with a team of young professionals specializing in legal fields and social sciences.

Our vision was to create a chatbot capable of answering any questions about the AI Act, thus assisting a wide range of stakeholders, such as startups, lawyers, AI scientists, and others. Driven by our passion and expertise in AI, we leveraged Large Language Models to democratize access to the EU AI Act and offer initial guidance for those seeking compliance with the specific legislation.

To achieve this goal, we utilized OpenAI’s API, developing a model finetuned with data compiled by our research team.

In February 2024, we began gathering relevant data from legal analyses of each article of the AI Act. During this time, the Act underwent numerous changes and amendments, which required us to continuously update and refine our dataset. After multiple rounds of feedback and revisions, we successfully collected a comprehensive dataset for developing our model.

Once the datasets were cleaned and our initial models were finetuned, we evaluated them and selected the one with the highest accuracy based on human assessment.

The results of our project are as follows:

Our model can quickly respond to user queries about the AI Act, providing concise yet detailed feedback with references to specific articles of the legislation. It is also capable of handling more complex questions. Additionally, we ensured that the chatbot delivers responses in a human-like manner, making the user experience more attractive and engaging. The chatbot comes currently in an English version, following the official text of the EU AI Act.

Users should keep in mind that the AI Act is a legal document, and as such, they should seek professional legal advice. Our chatbot does not serve as a substitute for formal legal counsel. We strongly believe the importance of the human in the loop during the use of every AI system. Therefore, our model serves as a tool to guide humans in assessing every case individually and provides an initial input to the user’s cognitive procedure of decision-making.

Below you can see our chatbot in action:

We believe our chatbot is an innovative and groundbreaking tool that combines cutting-edge technologies with human expertise to make AI more accessible and help the public better understand complex legal texts.
